Is it practical not to use insecticides for the control of different pests in cereals? Since, majority of the countries in SouthAsia rely on cereals production for their livelihood.

From my experience working with farmers, I heard from a farmer claiming that he did not use insecticides during some field seasons. This was a rice farmer, very experience, and quite educated. After discussing closely with him, he explained about balanced fertilizing, the importance of returning hay into the field, managing water levels to prevent snail damage, and monitoring stem borers after the the rain or at full moon. However, he did also say he uses pesticides at some occasions when required at some season.
My conclusion is that it may be possible for some areas, some farmers and some season, but others may still need pesticides/insecticides.
